El trasplante pulmonar (TP) es un recurso terapéutico plenamente vigente en los países de nuestro entorno desde hace más de 30 años. En España, se iniciaron los primeros programas de TP en los años finales de los 80 y principios de los 90, y actualmente se vienen a realizar anualmente en torno a los 250 anuales en los 7 centros con programa de TP establecido.
A medida que han pasado los años y se ha incrementado el número pacientes con TP y su supervivencia, ha surgido la necesidad de atender no sólo a la evolución del injerto, sino al conjunto de comorbilidades y complicaciones extrarrespiratorias que pueden presentarse. Estos aspectos cobran especial importancia en el lugar de residencia habitual del paciente, que muchas veces es lejano al centro donde se realizó el TP y que exigen conocimientos y capacidad de respuesta por los médicos que atienden al paciente en su vida diaria.
