ACTUALIZACIÓN EN EL MANEJO DE LA ENCEFALOPATÍA DE WERNICKE

La encefalopatía de Wernicke (EW) es un síndrome neuropsiquiátrico de inicio agudo o subagudo, consistente en alteraciones oculares, ataxia y síndrome confusional. Se origina a raíz de un déficit prolongado de tiamina asociado a factores genéticos o ambientales. La tiamina es una vitamina hidrosoluble que interviene en el metabolismo de la glucosa en el sistema nervioso central, actuando como cofactor de diversas enzimas (transcetolasa, α-cetoglutarato-deshidrogenasa y piruvato deshidrogenasa). Además, participa en la conducción axonal y en la sinapsis interneuronal, siendo todavía desconocido el mecanismo fisiológico a nivel del sistema nervioso periférico.
